Meditation…does it really work? What does it do? The practice of Meditation is fairly new to me. As of this writing, I started 81 days ago and have meditated 79 out of the 81 days, with meditating every day for the past 74 days.
I was one who enjoyed my quiet time each morning, but never really got into meditating until, well, 81 days ago. Steph Marks (Pretty Simple Wellness) has been meditating for a very long time and has encouraged me to give it try several times. I finally did and am so excited with my progress in focus and the length of time for each session.
She recommended that I install the Insight Timer app for my phone. It allows you to enter your meditation time or use guided meditations that they provide right in the app. That sounded like a winner to me, especially since I didn’t really know a lot about it or what I liked or didn’t like regarding my sessions.
It wasn’t easy for me at first so I started with a one minute guided meditation. I am up to an average of 15.6 minutes per session, with my longest session being 29 minutes. I love it and look forward to it each day.
I believe anyone can do a one minute meditation, don’t you?
Inside the Insight Timer app, you will find many guided meditations and you can view them by duration or person. I have picked some favorites that I switch around with but my absolute favorite is the “Discovering Your Dharma” (life purpose) meditation with davidji. Steph has talked about him for a long time and now I know why. His voice is easy to listen to. He talks just the right amount during the sessions. And, I like the music.
What I like best about this particular meditation are the questions that davidji presents. He suggests that you ask these questions often throughout the day. The questions resonated with me because they are similar to the questions that I ask myself…and you, all of the time.
Take a look at the five questions that davidji encourages you to ask yourself throughout the day. See if they resonate with you.

What do I love to do? What am I passionate about?

What is it that while I’m doing it, time seems to stand still?

What was I doing the last time I felt joy-filled and in the zone?

What are my unique abilities and my distinctive talents? What do I do better than anyone else?

How can I help others doing what I’m good at?
These are some of the same questions that Rev. Dr. John Waterhouse presented at a workshop at the Center for Spiritual Living in Asheville, NC. I believe that was in 2002 and my purpose statement has remained true to this day. When I think about it and decide that I need something more significant, I go right back to the one I created then and it is true. “My purpose is to live life with the zeal (excitement, enthusiasm, and passion) that I feel and to demonstrate to others that they too have the power to empower themselves.”
It’s funny when I think of why I got into coaching in 2000. I love being happy and wanted to teach others to be happy. That is the core desire for me. To be happy and live life fully. L.I.F.E. Live In Full Expression. So, to fulfill my purpose, I need to live life fully. It’s just that simple.
This post was not to persuade you to start meditating…unless you are ready. If you are, you can start with a simple practice. Like I said earlier, I started with a 1 minute session. Yes, 1 minute. Then I moved to 5, Now, I meditate between 15-20 minutes each day.
There are many types of meditation practices out there. I prefer guided meditation and I like soft music in the background. You may not. That’s what great about it is, you can make it what you need it to be.
