Got problems? Need more money? Been there, done that…and I’ll bet you have too. I believe Ged Backland, creator of Aunty Acid, summed it up with this cartoon. “I’ve got 99 problems and money could solve at least 98 of them.” What do you think?
There is a way to be, do, and have everything you want. I know you have heard me say it many times. Maybe you believe it…or maybe not. As a life coach, I get a lot of people who want to change their life. They want to travel, have nicer homes, cars, maybe boats, and other fun things. But the common theme is , “they don’t believe good people get rich” or “there is not enough money to go around.” I am here to tell you that those two statements are not true!
I am re-reading The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles and would like to share these five things from the book that I believe are significant. Maybe they will help you change your thinking about money.

It’s okay to want to be rich
Do you believe there is anything wrong with being rich? Here’s what the author says in chapter one of The Science of Getting Rich. “The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life; and that desire is praiseworthy.” We all know that we develop our mind, body, and soul by reading, learning, observing, exercising, eating healthy foods. These all take money, right? Wattles sums up this part by saying, “Man’s right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich.” -
If they can do it, you can too
It’s not a matter of which neighborhood you live in, or your talent and abilities. Wattles says, “The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way; those who do things in this Certain Way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich.” Cause and effect. If someone in your neighborhood, city, state, type of business, or anything else has become rich, you can too. Even if no one else around you has experienced wealth, you can still do it. There might be some particular things that you need to learn about a business, but your capability to become rich is not dependent on where you live or your current skills or abilities. “You may be the poorest person on the continent, and be deeply in debt; you many have neither friends, influence, nor resources; but if you begin to do things in this way, you must infallibly begin to get rich, for like causes must produce like effects.” -
What you DO is a result of what you THINK
Thoughts. Yes, your thoughts create results. Sometimes they are not the results you were looking for. Wattles said, “Thought is the only power which can produce tangible riches from the Formless Substance. The stuff from which all things are made is a substance which thinks, and a thought of form in this substance produces the form.” In chapter four, he teaches us that we must do things in a Certain Way and in order to do that, we must become able to think in a certain way. I know we see a lot of poverty and disease around us and it can be easy to focus on those things. To think riches when looking at poverty and think health and well-being when looking at sickness requires power. We must hold onto the truth that there is one source from which ALL things are made and that we have the ability to impress our thoughts upon this source and cause what we are thinking about to be created. Wattles tells us that we must lay aside all other concepts and dwell upon it until it has become our habitual way of thought.

It’s not a competition
We can help others by being the very best version of ourself as possible. “You can make the most of yourself only by getting rich; so it is right and praiseworthy that you should give your first and best thought to the work of acquiring wealth.” We are here to experience life. We are creators, not competitors. When you compete, you strive to be, do, and have more than others for the sake of having more. When you create, you get what you want in a way that you provide for others as well. That’s lasting wealth. Here is one of my favorite quotes from the book, “Never get afraid that you will lose what you want because some other person ‘beats you to it.’ That cannot possibly happen; you are not seeking anything that is possessed by anybody else, you are causing what you want to be created from the formless Substance, and the supply is without limits.”

Be clear and do the work
Be absolutely clear about what you want. I loved the analogy Wattles used in chapter eight about if you were sending someone a letter, you wouldn’t just write out the letters of the alphabet and tell them to figure out what you were wanting to say. That would be crazy…and chances of you getting your point across is next to impossible. The same with our thought of what we desire. We are sending those thoughts out and the more clear we make them, the better opportunity there is that, when we receive, it will be just as we pictured…or better. I know you have heard me say that we have to do the work.
It starts with your thoughts. Decide who you want to be, what you want to do and have. Get a picture in you mind. There is much more in the book and I will have a full review of it later but for now, I want you to understand that this method is “for people whose desire for riches is strong enough to overcome mental laziness and the love of ease, and make them work.”
This is the beginning of creating the life that you want. The Science of Getting Rich is a small, but powerful book. It can change your way of thinking about money. There are some free audio resources on line, and I have a digital copy, but I needed the book to underline and make my notes in the margin. If you have not read it, I encourage you to get it today.
